SNAP Student Group
- What is the primary mission of your group
"WCU SNAP chapter's mission is to organize students preparing for initial licensure
as registered nurses, promote development of the skills that students will need as
responsible and accountable members of the nursing profession, and mentor nursing
students who are prepared to lead the profession in the future."
- What events/accomplishments did your group complete in the last academic year?
"The biggest accomplishment in the last academic year was the increase in enrollment
of 44 members which led to the expansion from 4 to 8 delegates at the Pennsylvania
State Convention. Three additional chair positions (volunteer, fundraising, and social)
were added to WCU SNAP's executive board in addition to the creation of a mentormentee
program to enhance leadership opportunities within members. WCU's chapter organization
received the Gold Award at the 2016 PA State Convention as well as WCU's Most Improved
Student Organization Award for the 2016-2017 academic year. At the State Convention,
WCU members participated in and achieved success in the NCLEX Bowl competition. A
group also presented a resolution, In Support of Education About Alternating Birthing
Positions, at the annual National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) Convention in
Dallas, Texas. There it was passed and adopted by NSNA. Furthermore, SNAP hosted two
American Red Cross Blood Drives last year. In Fall of 2016, 28 people donated blood
reaching 18 collected donations to help 54 area hospital patients. Through SNAP's
Blood Drive in Spring 2017, 28 donations were collected from 37 donors to help a total
of 84 hospital patients! Other various volunteer and community involvement lead by
SNAP include: Habitat For Humanity of Chester County, Adopt-a-Block, Chester County
Day, West Chester Safe Harbor Meal, Bringing Hope Home 5k runs, Blanket Bash with
the Abbe and Friar Society, The Kindred House Presents (Giving Tree), Bingo at Barclay
Friends Senior Living Community, Alex's Lemonade Stand, monthly collection for Mama
Esther's Orphanage in South Africa, and the collection of Pop Tabs for the Ronald
McDonald House."
- What events or goals do you have for this academic year?
"This academic year, WCU's Student Nurses' Association of Pennsylvania aims to enhance
membership involvement with such events: the PA State Convention, the NSNA Convention,
SNAP and NSNA Workshops, and Chapter volunteer and social events. Another goal is
to collect 50+ donations of blood at the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 Blood Drives. SNAP's
Fall 2017 Blood Drive is planned for November 6th, 2017. Other future goals and events
planned for this year include: Adopt-A-Block, SNAP's First Annual 5k, a Charity Event
for South Africa's Mama Esther Orphanage, and networking with other Health Science
Clubs on campus."
- What is one thing you would like to share regarding your student group that is important
for everyone to understand/know?
"Something SNAP would like to share is a quote from the National Student Nurses' Association
website: "NSNA is the voice of the future nursing profession”. It is imperative for
student nurses to become involved in legislative early so that healthcare trends and
legislative issues are understood by future nurses. NSNA members are provided with
various opportunities to participate in legislation at the chapter, state, and national
level."
- Who is your faculty advisor?
"Michelle Kensey"
