Program Types

WCU supports international service-learning through both credit-bearing study abroad programs, as well as non-credit, co-curricular experiences.

Credit-bearing programs should be developed in consultation with the faculty member’s department chair. In developing the syllabus, faculty should consider the Principles of Good Practice, as well as the importance of reflection and critical thinking.

Non-credit, co-curricular programs should also include educational opportunities, as well as reflection or critical thinking exercises.  A good model to consider might be the principles developed by the Alternative Break movement , which combines travel with direct service and an educational component.  Not all of these principles will be appropriate to all international service-learning programs, but they are worthy of consideration.
