Dr. Alessandra Seggi Comics: No Laughing Matter Thursday, February 26, 4 -5:15 pm Philips Autograph Library This presentation offers a selective journey through the art, artists, and gatekeepers of wordless novels, graphic novels, and comic strips. It explores the power and perceived dangers of humor and the layered visual and verbal storytelling used to address complex and serious themes. Moving from pictorial satire and Frans Masereel's woodcuts to Art Spiegelman's Maus, Nick Sousanis's Unflattening, Si Lewen's paintings, and Alison Bechdel's Fun Home, the talk traces the evolution and impact of the form. A guided tour of the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology's exhibition Panel by Panel: The Social and Cultural Impact of Comics will follow Dr. Seggi's presentation.
