Ensemble Pedagogy & Practicum  - MWE 536

July 13-17, 2026
In-Person - 3 Credits

This intensive summer course provides advanced study in ensemble pedagogy through a learner-centered lens, emphasizing the connection between teaching decisions, student learning, and musical outcomes across elementary through secondary band and choral settings. The course integrates philosophy, rehearsal techniques, score study, and assessment into a cohesive framework for responsive and effective ensemble instruction.

Through a combination of seminar discussions, collaborative mapping and planning, lab ensemble experiences, and peer teaching, participants will examine how to design rehearsals that promote student agency, musical independence, and inclusive ensemble culture. Topics include diagnostic and responsive rehearsal strategies, repertoire selection and score study, learner-centered assessment practices, and approaches to fostering expressive, engaged performance.

Participants will apply course concepts in real time through conducting rotations, structured rehearsal labs, and a culminating symposium, where they share and reflect on their pedagogical approaches. Emphasis is placed on reflective practice, adaptability, and the development of teaching strategies that are both musically rigorous and responsive to diverse learners.
