Our tree is a complex and beautiful expression of life—as is the practice of contemplation. It is related to the tree of contemplative practices assembled by the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society, a long-standing organization promoting practice for personal, organizational, and academic applications. Our programs aim towards this full panoply of practices—roots in awareness and connection, branches of practice of stillness, generativity, creativity, activism, relationality, movement, and time.
It is the roots of awareness and connection that draw us all together across the University. These are essential values across all disciplines: to pay attention and to call others to attention. At base, teaching and learning are a sharing of attention. And, here's the deal, attention and sharing can improve together. That is a promise of contemplative practice; a friendly way of being together that leads to wisdom.
