M.Ed. School Health

  1. Who are the current students and what are their backgrounds?

    • Our students are health and physical education teachers, elementary teachers, and school nurses. We have a small number of students who are not in teaching, but are working in associations with an interest in school health education.

  2. What are the strengths of your program?

    • Faculty have extensive experience in teaching health education in a school setting; expertise working with school districts in curriculum development, and staff development; they have received external grant funds for school health education; faculty with state and national recognition in school health education; faculty who have conducted, published and presented competencies for a school health educator; program has flexibility for students to select elective coursework (dependent in their academic background) in education and counseling.

  3. I am returning to school after a while, will I be able to do well?

    • Factors which contribute to success in our graduate program include: previous academic achievement and coursework in health education; professional experiences in health education, commitment and dedication and motivation for completing a graduate degree. Also, students should recognize that placing a high priority on the necessary course demands will assist in graduate courses.

  4. My undergraduate GPA is low. Will I be considered for admission?

    • You must meet the minimal criteria for acceptance (2.80 GPA) in the program.

    • Undergraduate GPA, professional experiences and academic coursework all factor into the admission decision.

  5. Do I have to take any entrance exams?

    • No! GRE, MAT or GMAT are not required for the M.Ed program in school health.

  6. Are there any prerequisites to be met?

    • You will need to have completed coursework in statistics and basic anatomy and physiology as well as demonstrate computer proficiency.

    • Other program prerequisites may be identified after a review of your transcripts.

  7. I do not have an undergraduate major in health education. Will I need prerequisites?

    • Each applicant's transcripts are carefully evaluated for the appropriate foundation courses in education and health education.

    • Admission decisions, full or provisional are based on review.

  8. What job opportunities exist for program graduates?

    • There are limited job opportunities in teaching health education at the K-12 level in Pennsylvania. Many students are employed as health education teachers in other states.

    • The majority of our M.Ed. students are teaching K-12 health education or working as a school nurse.

    • You could be employed as a health educator for voluntary health agencies, state agencies, federal agencies, or health organizations (hospital, corporate, fitness centers).

    • K-12 Health education teacher certification is not offered in this M.Ed. degree.

  9. Do you have a placement service, or offer help with placement?

    • No, although our faculty do have contacts at the local, state, and national level. Our faculty will work with you to keep your apprised of job openings.

  10. Where do the graduates of our program work?

    • School, community agencies, voluntary health organizations, corporations, hospitals primarily within Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.
