Registration Open for Wells School of Music’s 2023 SUMMER CAMPS AND PROGRAMSSummer Jazz Camp

Music Camps Programmed to Serve Students in Grades 3 – 12, College Students, & Professionals

West Chester University’s Wells School of Music has announced dates and open registration for summer music camps that entertain and educate area students from 3rd – 12th grade, as well as college students and professionals. Camps to serve musicians of varying ages and abilities are available during the months of June and July. Taught by expert faculty and local professionals, all programs take place in the Wells School of Music’s state-of-the-art facilities in the Swope Music Building and Performing Arts Center, 817 S. Elementary and Middle School Music Camps (For grades 3 – 8)

Monday, June 26 – Friday, June 30, 9 a.m. – 12 noon: Finale Concert – Friday, June 30 at 12:30 

For kids who play a musical instrument or sing, there is the Elementary School Summer Music Camp (current grades 3-5) and the Middle School Summer Music Camp (current grades 6 – 8). For concert band, string orchestra and choral students, this camp offers small and large ensemble instruction, daily faculty recitals, and a culminating performance.

High School Summer Music Institute (For grades 9 – 12) 

Monday, July 10 – Saturday, July 15, 8:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.: Tentative Finale Concert: Saturday, July 15 at 5:15pm, residential and commuter options available.

High School Music InstituteThe High School Summer Music Institute is for students currently in grades 9 through 12. Every student receives two 30-minute private lessons on their primary instrument or voice. Students will perform with a variety of ensembles including wind ensemble, string orchestra, vocal ensemble, and various chamber ensembles. Students will also participate in music theory classes and sectional rehearsals and master classes. The Institute’s faculty consists primarily of WCU Wells School of Music professors, all of whom are active performing artists in the Philadelphia region. The residential option offers students a week-long overnight summer camp experience.

Summer Jazz Camp (Advanced Middle School and High School Students)

Sunday, July 16 – Friday, July 21, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (with evening activities for residential campers): Tentative Finale Concert – Friday July 21 at 1 p.m., residential and commuter options available.

The Summer Jazz Camp is designed for advanced middle school and high school students who wish to explore jazz improvisation, arranging, orchestration, jazz history, and performance techniques. Visiting artists as well as the WCU faculty will perform and conduct master classes on various jazz subjects. All participants will need to have a knowledge of scales, be able to read music, transpose, and be proficient on an instrument. Both residential and commuter options available. The Jazz Camp’s faculty consists primarily of WCU Wells School of Music professors, all of whom are active performing artists in the Philadelphia region. The residential option offers students a weeklong overnight summer camp experience.

Band Leadership Training Workshop (High School Students) Saturday, July 22 – Sunday, July 23

Led by nationally acclaimed experts (Tim Lautzenheiser, Adam Gumble, Bobby Lambert, Len Lavelle, and John Villella) our intensive 2-day Leadership Training Workshop is an immersive experience designed to prepare students with the skills, knowledge, and tools they need to excel as leaders inside and outside the band room. This workshop fosters a sense of connection between participants from different programs and equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to positively impact their home programs on and off of the field! 

INCOMPARABLE Marching Arts Workshop (High School Students) Monday, July 24 – Thursday, July 27

Student participants work with our INCOMPARABLE educational team to develop performance techniques and leadership skills in their area of concentration (Drum Major, Winds, Color Guard, Battery Percussion, or Front Ensemble). All participants engage in a collaborative and goal-oriented full-ensemble environment while assembling a Capstone Demonstration to be performed at the conclusion of the Workshop!

Marching Arts Education Summit (College aged and Professionals) Monday, July 24 – Thursday, July 27

Join us at West Chester University for the Marching Arts Education Summit presented by Vivace Productions, July 24-27, 2023. Our nationally renowned clinicians will lead workshops on a wide range of topics, including:

West Chester University’s Wells School of Music offers students an outstanding opportunity in concentrated performance and musicianship. The School’s superior performance and practice venues include 22 new Steinways, Skinner organ, tech lab, Roland piano lab, and more.
