PHILLIES EXECUTIVES BRING THE GAME TO WCU
April 10, 2026
The WCU Sports Analytics Club, led by President Luke Volm and Beta Alpha Psi, with support from the College of Business and Public Management's Dean's Office, welcomed three Philadelphia Phillies executives to West Chester University's campus on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, for an evening that brought the business of professional sports directly to students.
John Nickolas, CFO and a proud 1990 WCU alumnus, along with Josh Barbieri, Director of Business Analytics, and Angela Ditri, Senior Business Analyst, spoke to a packed room of students from both clubs. Moderated by incoming Sports Analytics Club president Carter Kubica, the conversation covered career paths and the growing role of AI in the business of professional sports. Students also had plenty of time to connect one-on-one with all three guests. The highlight of the evening came when Nickolas passed around his Phillies National League Championship and World Series rings, turning an already memorable event into one the students won’t soon forget.
Barbieri and Ditri offered students a compelling window into what analytics careers inside a major league organization look like. Barbieri joined the Phillies in 2001 and went on to build the data infrastructure that underlies the organization's entire business analytics operation today. Ditri's path was equally instructive: she came aboard as an intern in 2020, earned a full-time role, and now leads the department's predictive modeling work, applying her background in data science and Python to everything from dynamic ticket pricing to concession analysis and process automation.
Guest speakers like these represent the best of experiential learning: professionals who pull back the curtain on their industries, share hard-won lessons, and remind students that the work they are doing today has a very real destination.
