2020 Family Weekend - September 25-27

Each fall, West Chester University’s Family Weekend gives our RAM FAM the opportunity to enjoy WCU’s campus, get to know the golden ram community, and spend quality time together.

Events include planetarium shows, family picnic, art exhibits, athletic events, campus history tours, and child-friendly programming. Please note: The event listings below are for 2019 and are included to give you an idea of what we have planned in the past. Check back for 2020 as we get closer to the event!

Friday, October 4th, 2019

  • 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. - The Sleepout: Engaging Our Community of CARE (Residential Quad)
    • The West Chester University community is invited to cultivate change on campus and in the Chester County community by learning about those who experience homelessness.  Regional sponsors and participants are encouraged to make donations that will benefit local organizations committed to this cause.  Attendees will sort and create items for “care bags” to be donated to Giving Love Bags, Inc. Toiletries are welcomed as donations. 
  • 8:00 p.m. – Rams After Hours (Sykes Student Union) - Triple D: DIY, Donuts, and Dog Tags *

Saturday, October 5th, 2019

  • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Welcome Center and Check-in (Sykes Lobby and Patio) *
    • Check-in and pick up some swag including the weekend schedule and enjoy continental breakfast refreshments courtesy of Student Services, Incorporated
    • Personal care item collection for WCU's Resource Pantry
  • 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – West Chester Borough Growers Market (corner of North Church and Chestnut Street) *
    • We invite you to visit West Chester’s original producer-only market right in the heart of the borough to purchase fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, and more!
  • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Student Leadership and Involvement Headquarters (Sykes CSI)
    • An opportunity for students to discover involvement opportunities on campus with 1:1 consultations with our Leadership Consultants - open to both families and students! 
    • Refreshments will be served.
  • 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. – Ancestry DNA: A Family Affair Workshop (Sykes Room 115) *
    • In this session, Dr. Anita Foeman (Professor in the Department of Communication and Media) will explore what scientists have learned about the human trek across the globe and link it to your family stories. Participants will look at physical and cultural characteristics that are carried from generation to generation and share what they hope to carry forward. Participants who are adopted can talk about what they have received from both biological and adoptive families and the gift of inheritance.
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Planetarium Show (Mather Planetarium)
    • Enjoy a tour of the night sky with a Ph.D. Astronomer!
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Superhero Costume Design (Sykes 10A) *
    • In this session, Professor Constance Case (Department of Theater and Dance) will lead participants in how a costume designer creates dynamic characters through use of color, shape, line, and texture. In this hands-on lesson, participants will learn about the elements of art while crafting their own character costumes in this fun, Project-Runway-style challenge. Some mild physical activity involved.
  • 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – West Chester University Foundation Family Picnic (Academic Quad) $*
    • Ticketed event, registration required.
  • 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Ram Shop Open (Linden Street) *
    • Explore the newly opened Ram Shop staffed by students of D-CAP.
  • 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Planetarium Show (Mather Planetarium)
    • Enjoy a tour of the night sky with a Ph.D. Astronomer! *Child-friendly Showing
  • 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Historic Tour of WCU Campus (Doorway to Old Main)
    • Walk around campus and learn its storied history with Dr. Anne Krulikowski (Department of History).
  • 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Student Recreation Center Open House (Student Recreation Center) *
    • Come explore the Student Recreation Center after lunch. Enjoy open courts, facility tours (every half hour!), raffles, access to the rock wall (open for children 14 and over), and some free and healthy snacks courtesy of the Office of Parent and Family Relations.
    • Enjoy a virtual reality experience from Neverland Virtual Reality of WCU in the racquetball courts. Open to guests 6 years and older!
  • 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Wellness Resource Fair (Student Recreation Lobby)
    • Tabling from various student wellness and wellbeing offices including the Counseling Center, Office of Wellness Promotion, the Center for Women and Gender Equity, the Center for Trans and Queer Advocacy, the Lawrence A. Dowdy Multicultural Center, Student Activities Council, Twardowski Career Development Center, and the Student Recreation Center.
  • 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. – Toy Story 4 Movie Screening (Sykes Theater) *
    • Join the Student Activities Council for a free showing of a family fun movie! Popcorn courtesy of the Student Activities Council.
  • 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. – Planetarium Show (Mather Planetarium)
    • Enjoy a tour of the night sky with a Ph.D. Astronomer!
  • 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. – Historic Tour of WCU Campus (Doorway to Old Main)
    • Walk around campus and learn its storied history with Dr. Anne Krulikowski (Department of History).
  • 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. – Family Bingo! (Sykes Theater) *
    • Stop in for a round (or more!) of Bingo hosted by the Student Activities Council to win some WCU swag courtesy of the Office of Parent and Family Relations.
  • 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. – Planetarium Show (Mather Planetarium)
    • Enjoy a tour of the night sky with a Ph.D. Astronomer!
  • 5:00 p.m. – Family Weekend Feast (Lawrence Dining Hall) $*
    • Enjoy an all-you-can-eat dinner in the dining hall for just $10 (pre-registration and payment highly encouraged!). Dine and engage in fellowship with families who are from your same region!
  • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. – First-Generation Family Reception (Sykes 209 and 210)
    • Join WC’s First (WCU’s initiative for first-generation college students) to hear from a panel of first-generation students at WCU while enjoying fellowship with other first-generation students and their families. Register here! 
  • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. – Legacy Family Reception (Sykes 115)
    • Join the Office of Alumni Relations and the WCU Alumni Association for a dessert reception for legacy families. Learn about opportunities for involvement while your student is here at WCU and enjoy fellowship with other legacy students and their families. Register here!
  • 7:30 p.m. – WCU Live! Broadway Rocks (Asplundh Theater) $

    • Broadway Rox is new, upbeat live concert celebrating the contemporary musicals of Broadway. It combines the best of classical musicals with elements of a fun rock show for an epic, one-of-a-kind concert event. Broadway Rox features the talents of today’s hottest Broadway performers accompanied by a live five-piece band. The show includes songs from such beloved musicals as Wicked, RENT, Mamma Mia!, Hairspray, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and many more!  
  •  8:00 p.m. – Student Activities Council Presents: Comedy Hypnotist Eric Mina (Sykes Theater) *
    • You have never seen a show like this one!  Eric’s show combines comedy, inspiration, and fun to create a once in a lifetime experience. Audiences will be screaming with laughter as they watch what is bound to be your new favorite act. Eric has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Penn State University and is a certified Hypnotherapist.  He’s performed hundreds of shows with huge crowds and never fails to amaze viewers to give them a show that they will be talking about for years. He has been referred to as incredible, mind blowing, and has turned non-believers of hypnosis into believers.

  • 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - Zeta Tau Alpha "5K for the Fight" (Ehinger Gym) $
    • The 5K race around campus will begin at 10:00 a.m. and registration is $20 at the door, which includes a t-shirt. Other events include: Raffles from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m., DJ and games outside of the gym before and during the race, and food sales. Proceeds will benefit breast cancer awareness and education.

  • 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. -  Brunch in the Borough (Borough of West Chester) *
    • Check out two of our local favorites, Barnaby's or Saloon 151, and enjoy a 15% discount if you present your Family Weekend brochure to your waiter.
  • All Day - Fun in the Borough (Borough of West Chester)
