Biomedical Engineering
The Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at West Chester University (WCU) is an interdisciplinary program that brings together engineering, biology and medicine. Our students learn to apply the theories and methods of engineering to study, develop and provide innovative technical solutions for medical disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Our program provides hands-on experiences that ensure graduates are productive and successful as they begin their careers in the biomedical industry. The program also offers the academic preparation for continuing on to medical, dental and law schools.

About Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering methods, scientific principles and technology to medicine and biology. Biomedical engineers combine engineering principles with medical sciences to design and develop devices, equipment, computer systems and software for applications in healthcare. They advance fundamental concepts and create knowledge from the molecular to the organ system levels and develop innovative materials, processes, implants and informatics for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation and the improvement of health. From diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, biomedical engineering has entered the public consciousness through the proliferation of implantable medical devices, such as artificial kidney and cardiac pacemakers, to the more futuristic technologies such as 3-D printing of organs and stem cell engineering. This contemporary field of engineering focuses on innovations that improve human health and healthcare at all levels.

- Developing a professional career in a Biomedical Engineering industry such as medical devices, biotechnology, biopharma, bioinstrumentation, or other health and science-related fields.
- Continuing their professional development through life-long learning, including graduate programs in Biomedical Engineering or related engineering and life sciences, medicine, law, business, or other professional programs.
- Practicing successful written and oral communication skills necessary to interact with health care professionals, engineers, and scientists; and working effectively in teams in their professional area.
- Contributing to their community and professions through the application of multidisciplinary biomedical engineering approaches.

Student Outcomes
Upon completion of the B.S. in Biomedical Engineering program, students will have:
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objective 6: an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
