philosophy

As an educator, my goal is not simply for students to acquire knowledge, but to help them understand how that knowledge applies to the people, communities, and professional situations they will encounter as nutrition and dietetics professionals. I strive to create a learning environment that is engaging, supportive, and relevant while challenging students to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply what they learn.

I believe students learn best when they are active participants in the learning process. Rather than relying solely on traditional lectures, I incorporate a variety of teaching strategies. These approaches give students opportunities to apply concepts, collaborate with their peers, communicate their ideas, and approach problems from different perspectives. Active learning is particularly important in nutrition and dietetics, where students must be able to translate scientific knowledge into practical recommendations and communicate effectively with diverse populations.

Creating a supportive learning environment is equally important to me. I want my students to know that I care about them not only as students, but as people. College students balance academics with work, family responsibilities, financial pressures, and many other challenges that can affect their ability to succeed. While I maintain high expectations and hold students accountable for their learning, I also recognize that flexibility, compassion, and communication can make an important difference. I strive to meet students where they are, help them identify a path forward when they encounter challenges, and provide the support and encouragement they need to succeed.
