Education
West Chester University utilizes the Cornell Model for Hazing Prevention , a comprehensive framework that emphasizes education, organizational coordination and support, and culture change.
Research shows that student organizations often share two core goals when welcoming new members:
- Building a cohesive and connected new member group, and
- Instilling a strong sense of organizational identity and belonging.
Knowing this, student leaders, alumni, and advisors can work with their organization to plan events and activities that promote these goals in a safe and responsible way.
When student leaders do not know where to find resources or answers to accomplish their goals, they create the answers themselves.
Healthy Building Group Activities
To support this work, the Hazing Prevention Task Force has created a dedicated resource that offers safe, effective alternatives to high-risk or hazing-related activities. These strategies help organizations strengthen community, promote belonging, and celebrate their values—while maintaining the health and safety of every student.
If you act as an advisor to an organization, your support is essential. Understanding the goals behind new member onboarding empowers you to:
- Ask the right questions,
- Identify potential risks, and
- Collaboratively develop safe, meaningful, and compliant experiences for all members.
We are grateful to our advisors and are here to respond to any questions or support you may have. Please reach out to your organization’s advising department for anything you may need.
