Campus Recreation

The Department of Campus Recreation provides leisure activities for the University community. Recognizing that individual needs differ, the program offers a variety of recreational components. These components include competitive intramural sports, club sports, open recreation, recreational swimming, special events, group fitness, small group training, fitness programs, climbing wall, and outdoor adventure pursuits. Through participation, individuals can develop friendships, improve their physical health, and learn new lifetime recreational activities and constructive ways to use leisure time.

Below is a brief description of each of the recreational components. For more detailed information, please contact the Campus Recreation Office in the Student Recreation Center, 610-436-1732.

Open Recreation/Recreational Swim

Open recreation and recreational swim provide for the needs of individuals who are interested in informal recreation. Gymnasium and swimming facilities are available throughout the year for "free play" and recreational swimming. For a nominal fee ($5 daily or $10 weekend), guest passes can be obtained when friends visit campus and wish to use the facilities.

Two swimming pools on campus are available during the week for open recreation: the Hollinger pool on North Campus and the South Campus pool. WCU ID cards and guest passes for visitors are required for admittance. Check bulletin boards for times or call the Aquatics Office at 610-436-2127.

Intramural Sports

The intramural sports program at West Chester University is based on student interest and provides every student with an opportunity to participate in team/dual/individual competition. The program offers divisional play for men, women, and co-recreational teams in many different activities. Check our Campus Recreation website to see the list of intramural sports provided each semester; these sports can be provided in league or tournament play. Other competitive recreational activities may be offered if there is enough student interest.

Club Sports

Club sports, which are competitive, recreational, and instructional in nature, provide an opportunity for students with similar sports interests to enjoy these activities together. West Chester currently has 31 club sports that are coordinated through Campus Recreation. Check our Campus Recreation website to see the list of our current club sports.

Climbing Wall and Outdoor Adventure Pursuits Program

We recently opened our 38-foot-high climbing wall. It consists of seven ropes and a bouldering area. Check our Campus Recreation website for the times during the week when the wall is open. We provide belay certification for any student who is interested in becoming belay certified at no cost.

As people find themselves more and more isolated from the natural environment, there has been an ever-increasing appreciation for and desire to experience the outdoors. The Outdoor Adventure Pursuits Program continues to meet this need by providing students, faculty, and staff opportunities to participate in low-cost, fun, and people-powered outdoor adventure activities. In the past, based on student interest, we have provided canoing, rock climbing, and ski trips.

Group Fitness/Small Group Training

Group fitness sessions are offered in the studios in the Student Recreation Center throughout the week during each semester. Sessions provided include high- and low-impact, step, toning, cross training, body sculpting, boot camp, cardio-blast, and speed cycling. The hours vary throughout the day and evening depending on instructor availability. There is no additional fee for participation in our group fitness program, however limited spots are available in each studio, so participation is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Small group training includes GRIT, TRX, and summer boot camp.

Special Events

Several special events are organized throughout the year. These events range from one-day events such as the ping pong tournament and dodgeball, to multi-day tournaments such as tennis, ping-pong, wallyball, pickle ball and racquetball/squash.
