Book Clubs

CELT Book Club

Each semester, the Committee for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) selects one book related to teaching and learning and hosts a monthly book club. Each meeting lasts for one hour and provides faculty participants the opportunity to discuss the book with colleagues.

This fall semester, the book club will be reading and discussing Relationship-Rich Education: How Human Connections Drive Student Success in College by Peter Felten and Leo M. Lambert (2020). In Relationship-Rich Education, the authors explore ways relationships among students and instructors influence the learning environment. Drawing on interviews with 400 students, faculty, and staff at 29 higher education institutions across the country, the authors' evidence-based study offers practical advice on how to develop and sustain relationship-based learning and apply the concept to your classrooms. Of particular value to WCU faculty, the book explores the benefits of relationship-rich education for first-generation college students along with ways to overcome inequities and barriers for improving student success.

Because the West Chester University Library has an unlimited e-book license for this title, CELT will offer our book club selection as an e-book rather than send hard copies. You may access the book here, when logged in to the library with your WCU credentials. With the e-book license, you may download two chapters as PDFs at a time or read the book in its entirety in your browser. We welcome your feedback on our decision to use an e-book, which was made with the TLC/CELT budget in mind.

We will have two Zoom meetings during the semester:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 3:00 PM or Thursday, Oct. 5 at 12:30 PM
  • Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 3:00 PM or Thursday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 PM
