Program Overview
The Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy prepares students to become candidates for music therapy board certification. The program combines a clinical core with music theory, music history, music performance, psychology, and anatomy. Our approach allows students to serve a wide range of clients in a variety of clinical settings using percussion, piano, voice, and guitar. Students receive in-depth, hands-on training by completing 1,200 hours of clinical training and internship hours over the course of their studies. The B.M. in Music Therapy is offered through the Wells School of Music which promotes excellence, celebrates expression, and supports our community of musicians inside and outside the classroom.
Program Highlights
- Coursework teaches functional piano, guitar, and voice as well as human body awareness through the study of psychology and anatomy and physiology
- Early opportunities for hands on experience with a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC)
- Internship opportunities including university affiliated regional internships and American Music Therapy Association National Roster internships
- Ability to work with a variety of clinical populations through the clinical observation, pre-internship, and internship experiences
- Research instruction where students become familiar with current music therapy research and how to apply it to their own practice and education
- Opportunities for research apprenticeships and research grants under faculty supervision
- Personalized faculty advisement with an experienced interdisciplinary clinician and researcher
- Available complementary minors such as psychology and nutrition
Program Outcomes
- This program provides students with the experience and skills required to become a candidate for music therapy board certification. Once a candidate, you may take the certification examination administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Upon passing this examination, you will earn the credential Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC), and thus attains professional status as a music therapist.
- Graduates are also pursuing advanced study (master and doctorate degrees) in Music Therapy and related fields.
