Teacher Candidate Scholarships

CURRENTLY ENROLLED WCU STUDENTS:

The College of Education and Social Work offers more than 40 Teacher Candidate scholarships each year valued at $1,000 to $3,500 each with a total value of more than $110,000. These scholarships are awarded to teacher candidates on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor or the founder of the award. Some scholarships are one-time awards while others may be renewable.

The Scholarship application is OPEN. The deadline is MAY 5, 2024.

All students who wish to be considered for college scholarships are strongly encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some of the college scholarships are based on financial need and only students with documented financial need will be considered for those scholarships. The 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available.

PROSPECTIVE OR NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS

Scholarships are also offered to incoming freshman and newly admitted students through the financial aid office.

Undergraduate Social Work Scholarships

CURRENTLY ENROLLED WCU STUDENTS:

The Undergraduate Social Work scholarships are awarded to BSW students based on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor or the founder of the award.

  • DeBaptiste Scholarship is an endowed scholarship for undergraduate social work majors. Criteria include excellence in academic achievement, demonstrated community leadership initiative, demonstrated commitment to bi-cultural and bi-lingual social work practice, and assignment to practical working with at-risk, culturally diverse populations.
  • Dean’s Scholarship will be awarded to Undergraduate Social Work non-traditional students who will be seniors during the scholarship year.
  • Dr. Mildred “Mit” Joyner Endowed Scholarship will support a rising senior undergraduate student majoring in social work with a minimum 2.5 GPA and who demonstrates leadership, volunteerism, and a commitment to social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Finegan DeHope Scholarship will be awarded to a rising BSW senior who chooses to participate in a senior internship that focuses on neurology. First preference will be to a student who has been accepted to intern at ReMed.

Travel Grants: The Undergraduate Social Work program offers travel grants to students who are in their field practicum.  The award of the grant is between $50-$250.

Graduate Scholarships 

The Master of Social Work (MSW) scholarships

    • Nadine Bean Graduate Social Work Scholarship – will be awarded to first- or second-year student(s) enrolled in the Master of Social Work program with at least a 3.25 GPA. The scholarship is awarded to student(s) doing their field placement in an interprofessional setting of diverse backgrounds. 
    • Philadelphia MSW 2019 Cohort Scholarship will be awarded to an MSW student enrolled at the WCU Philadelphia location who is in good academic standing. Incoming first-year students are not eligible.
    • Laura Masse Memorial Scholarship will support an MSW student(s) entering their Specialized Field Practicum (SWG 598) within the field of mental health who demonstrates financial need.

The Master of Education in School Counseling (M.Ed) scholarship

Cheryl Hamel School Counseling Scholarship will be awarded to full or part-time graduate students pursing a Master's degree in School Counseling with a GPA of at least 3.50. Applicants must have completed at least 9 credits. A personal statement and one letter of recommendation is required.

The Transformative Principalship Certification program

 Matthew J. Busillo Principalship Certification Scholarship will be awarded to a candidate working for a school district that does not reimburse employees for continuing education. Candidate must be enrolled in the WCU Transformative Principalship Certification program or the equivalent.

The Master of Science in Transformative Education and Social Change

    • Shirley Walters Memorial Research Scholarship will be awarded to those students involved in scholarly research and enrolled in the TESC program
      Students will be nominated for this scholarship by faculty in the Educational Foundations and Policy Studies department. Please contact Dr. Jason Wozniak, jwozniak@wcupa.edu, for more information.

STIPENDS

In 2017, West Chester University’s MSW and MEd School Counseling Programs were awarded a $1.6 million U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Behavioral Health Workforce and Education Training (BHWET) grant. The primary goals of the grants are to increase the number of social workers and school counselors trained in integrated care and to expand behavioral health services to medically underserved populations and communities.
