Be Bold, Be Brave! Critical Conversations About All Things Barbie Takes Place on Nov. 10!Barbie event poster

West Chester University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Collection is hosting Be Bold, Be Brave! Critical Conversations About All Things Barbie on Friday, November 10, from 4 - 8 p.m. in Sykes Student Union Theatre, 110 West Rosedale Avenue, West Chester, PA. The event is FREE with registration. Sponsored by WCU’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, the WCU Center for Women & Gender Equity, the WCU Dowdy Multicultural Center, the WCU College of Arts & Humanities, and the WCU Student Activities Council, the event includes a FREE showing of the 2023 summer blockbuster Barbie followed by thoughtful conversations about the film and related topics like racial justice, gender justice, body size, mental health, and more! A boxed dinner will be provided to those in attendance.

In addition to the movie and discussion, WCU Associate Professor of English Emily Aguiló-Pérez will do a book signing and release of her book An American Icon in Puerto Rico. Aguiló-Pérez also presents the Opening Discussion. The full schedule of events includes:

  • 4:00 p.m.: Meet and greet, pictures with RAMMY in the iconic life-sized Barbie box, signed copies of An American Icon in Puerto Rico by WCU Associate Professor of English Emily Aguiló-Pérez, and Barbie swag!
  • 4:30 p.m.: Critical Conversations About All Things Barbie: Opening Discussion with Emily Aguiló-Pérez and students.
  • 5:00: FREE showing of the Barbie Movie.
  • 7:00: Boxed dinner and small group discussions to dig more deeply into fun and thoughtful conversations about Barbie as it relates to our lives.
