The 17-member Criterions Jazz Ensemble presents Welcome Back! A Mosaic of Exploration, a deep-hearted welcoming concert for the 2021-2022 season featuring music of exploration. The evening features beautiful and grooving music by two titans of composition and orchestra: Mary Lou Williams and Melba Liston, and arrangements originally written for Wes Montgomery by Oliver Nelson. Percussionist Joe Ganzelli, also a WCU alumnus, will play with the ensemble.

The Criterions is the longest running University jazz band in the country. Originating in the 1920s, they were a student-led ballroom dance band, and provided entertainment for University dances, proms and post-Friday night games. As times changed, the “Crites” became a Faculty-led Jazz Ensemble by the early 1980’s, when the School of Music began Jazz curricula. They are known for their mastery of American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century.

The Criterions Jazz Ensemble will also perform full concerts this season on Friday, November 5 at 7:30 p.m., and Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m.
