WCU’s Wells School of Music Launches New Degree: Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy
West Chester University continues to evolve a curriculum that meets needs for learners
and employers. Music Therapy is a growing field, both in the number of therapists
and in patients served. Responding to that need, West Chester University’s Wells School
of Music is launching the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy, which combines a clinical
core with music theory, music history, music performance, psychology, and anatomy.
The program, accredited by the American Music Therapy Association and the National
Association of Schools of Music, is recruiting a select number of students for the
fall, 2020 semester.
Associate Professor of Music and Director of the Music Therapy Program Angela Guerriero says, “As one of only two schools in the PA State System of Higher Education to offer a degree in Music Therapy, West Chester University is uniquely positioned to serve our student population and our region. Our Wells School of Music facilities, the expertise of our music faculty, and our suburban Philadelphia location are differentiators that can help students land jobs in a growing landscape of workplaces that includes schools, hospitals, private clinics and transitional housing.”
The Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy trains students to serve clients through the entire life span – neo-natal through hospice care - in a variety of clinical settings using percussion, piano, voice, and guitar. Students receive in-depth, hands-on training by completing 1,200 hours of clinical training and internship hours over the course of their studies. The program ultimately prepares students by providing them with the skills required to become candidates for music therapy board certification.
