As our world has been impacted adversely by the COVID-19 pandemic, the University shares the disappointment that our graduating students are feeling at a time when their last year on campus has been disrupted. Please know that we are committed to working with you to support the completion of your academic work and the conferring of degrees. Below see several details concerning graduation and commencement.

May 8-10 Commencements Postponed
All across our nation difficult decisions are being made to combat the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. In keeping with the same proactive strategy pursued by Governor Wolf to help protect the health and safety of Commonwealth residents, West Chester University’s commencement ceremonies will not be taking place the weekend of May 8, 2020. We are looking at alternate dates and will give graduates at least 45 days prior notice before a ceremony is rescheduled. Decisions about commencement ceremonies will be informed by guidance from federal and state authorities. When an alternate date is announced, updated ticketing information will be provided with no additional costs to the graduates.
Graduation Application Fee
Students pay a $99 Graduation Application Fee when they apply to graduate, which partially covers the costs associated with the activities related to not only the ceremony itself, but also other related items such as the caps, gowns, diplomas, and their covers. While the Graduation Application Fee does not cover all of the costs associated with graduation and commencement, the University does wish to recognize the impact of the decision to postpone our commencement ceremonies. It is in this spirit that we have decided to temporarily reduce the fee by 50%, which is in keeping with our other refund decisions. We believe this is the fairest thing for our students who are experiencing feelings of disappointment related to this particular impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Any student account credit balances will be refunded beginning the week of April 6. If you are signed up to receive direct deposits, the refund will be deposited into your designated bank account. If you have not already signed-up to receive direct deposits, we strongly encourage you to enroll in direct deposit through myWCU by Sunday, April 5. Failure to enroll in direct deposit by April 5 may delay your refund due to the generation and mailing of a paper refund check to your home address of record.
Caps and Gowns and Diploma Covers
We want all graduates to have their cap and gown and diploma covers delivered directly to them prior to May 8; therefore, all orders for caps and gowns and degree covers will be shipped to the home address we have on file.
Degrees are awarded within 6-8 weeks after final grades are posted for the spring semester. Once conferred, your degree will appear on your unofficial transcript within myWCU and on your official transcripts. It takes another 4-6 weeks for students to receive their West Chester University diploma. Diplomas are sent to the home address we have on file.
Honors cords will be available for purchase online for by all undergraduate students earning graduation honors (3.25 CUM GPA or higher, based on cumulative GPA from next-to-last semester before a student graduates). The charge for the cord is $10. Please click here to purchase your cord.
A list of those students who have earned University academic honors has been provided to the bookstore. Students on the list will be entitled to purchase an honors cord.
Because it takes 6-8 weeks for degree conferrals to be completed for all students. We recommend you check your unofficial transcript to confirm your degree has been awarded before ordering your official transcripts. Here are instructions on how to order an official copy of your transcript.
