Graduate Student Learning Outcomes
Student Learning Outcomes for the MA in Philosophy are three-fold.
- Content Mastery - Attain basic mastery of key figures and movements in the history of philosophy.
Pass a qualifying exam or write an acceptable master’s thesis.
- Analytic and Critical Reasoning - Demonstrate an ability to write substantive essays, showing independent thought
and the ability to account for objections to one’s own argument.
- Information Literacy - Become acquainted with scholarly literature, including journals, and effectively
utilize these sources in coursework and exams/thesis work.
Student Learning Outcomes for the MA in Philosophy: Applied Ethics are four-fold.
- Content Mastery - Attain basic mastery of key figures and movements in the history of philosophy,
including key ethical concepts and theories. Pass a qualifying exam or write an acceptable
master’s thesis.
- Proficiency in Ethics Application - Demonstrate competence in applying theory to real world situations and contexts
(in at least on sub-discipline: Business Ethics or Health Care Ethics).
- Analytic and Critical Reasoning - Demonstrate an ability to write substantive essays, showing independent thought
and the ability to account for objections to one’s own argument.
- Information Literacy - Become acquainted with scholarly literature, including journals, and effectively
utilize these sources in coursework and exams/thesis work.
