About Me
Dr. Tia Malkin-Fontecchio is a historian of Latin America and Director of Latin American and Latinx Studies. Her teaching and research interests include modern Latin America, educational inequality, state violence, and transformative global education. She has developed and led faculty-led study-abroad programs in Cuba, Mexico, and Guatemala that connect historical study with experiential learning and student-led social action. Her current work explores how study abroad can foster critical citizenship, expand access for underrepresented students, and promote meaningful engagement across cultures. She earned her BA in Latin American Studies and Latin American Language and Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MA and PhD in Latin American History from Brown University. She has lived in Recife, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, Brazil, and has traveled throughout the region, including Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. Her goal is to visit every country in Latin America.
