Dr. Brown is the Special Assistant to the Provost, and Professor & Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at West Chester University. He is a rhetorical scholar whose published articles and invited presentations focus upon African American culture and communication, black masculinity, and communication and sport. Also, he is the co-author of two textbooks, PUBLIC SPEAKING FOR SUCCESS: STRATEGIES FOR DIVERSE AUDIENCES AND OCCASIONS, 4th. ed. (Plymouth, MI: Hayden-McNeil) and ARGUMENTATION AND DEBATE: A PUBLIC SPEAKING APPROACH (with Martin Remland), 2nd. ed. (Dubuque, IA: Kendall/Hunt).

Dr. Brown teaches undergraduate courses in Public Speaking, Rhetorical Theory and Criticism, African American Culture and Communication, Communication Theory, and graduate courses in Culture, Media, and Representation; and Rhetoric and Leadership. Prior to being elected Chair, he served as the Assistant Chair/General Education Coordinator for his department.

Dr. Brown has held numerous leadership positions on campus including: Communication Consultant for the Dean of the College of Business and Public Affairs, Chair of the Council of Chairs, and Chair of the Space Allocation Committee. Furthermore, he has served as a member of the Tenure and Promotion Committee (TeP), the PASSHE Initiative, the Equity Scorecard, and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Diversity Advisory Committee. Moreover, he was the co-founder of WCU's Multicultural Faculty Commission, WCU’s Faculty Mentoring Program, in addition to, serving as the 2nd Vice-President for the Eastern Communication Association (ECA).

Currently, he serves on the WCU Presidential Search Committee, the University Budget Committee, the Curriculum and Academic Policy Council (CAPC)--where he serves on the Executive Committee, the Diversity Theme team for the Strategic Plan, and a faculty of color group that is providing leadership for WCU's multiculutral initiatives.

On a national level, he was appointed by the President of the National Communication Association (NCA) to serve as one of six team leaders who are leading faculty workgroups from across the country to create student learning outcomes for the Discipline of Communication Studies. NCA received the largest grant in its history (over $680,000) from the Lumina Foundation to fund this project.

Among his many honors include: West Chester University’s Drum Major for Justice Award, the Eastern Communication Association’s Past President Award (the highest award given by the ECA), and the MFC/FDI Transformational Leader Award. Dr. Brown holds a B.A. and M.A. from West Chester University, and a Ph.D. from Ohio University. Dr. Brown joined the faculty at West Chester University in 2002.
