Placement Exam

Students in degree programs that require specific mathematics courses are required to that the Math Placement Exam in order to register for their first semester of courses at WCU.

The Math Placement Exam is electronically proctored by Honorlock. Before accessing the exam please be sure to have the following elements in place to allow for proctoring:

  1. Prepare Your Hardware: Ensure you have a laptop or desktop computer equipped with a functional webcam.
  2. Install the Extension: Download the Google Chrome Browser and install the Honorlock Chrome Extension via the Honorlock Setup Page.
  3. Avoid the "Password Error": The most frequent issue students encounter is a prompt asking for a password. Note: You will not be provided with a password. If you see this prompt, it means your extension is not active. Please visit the HonorPrep Tutorial to verify your setup before starting.
  4. Ensure strong internet connection. (speed: 1.5 Mbps download, 750 Kbps upload). Students can run a system requirement check by going to the Honorlock Support page. Scroll down until you see "Simple Single-Click Test".
  5. Utilize a laptop or desktop computer (not a tablet/iPad/cell phone)
  6. Ensure you have a webcam and microphone.
  7. Have a photo ID with you (school ID: WCU Ram Card, or a government issued photo ID: driver’s license/passport/state ID card)
  8. Take your exam in a quiet private location, sit at a desk or table, do not have background noice such as a radio or television.
  9. Have pencil / blank paper ready. Don't use any outside help such as a calculator (other than the onscreen ALEKS calculator), tutor, or the internet.
    1. The test consists of up to 30 free-response questions. For best results:
    2. Make sure you carefully check your answer before submitting your response. You cannot return to questions after you submit answers.
    3. If you have any familiarity with a question, try your best to answer. ALEKS PPL adapts as you work through the assessment, using your answers to pinpoint what you do and don’t know and what questions to present next.
    4. You may encounter material you have never learned or don’t remember at all. On those questions, it is OK to select "I don’t know."
  10. Take the test seriously and do your best. See "What's covered on the test?" if you want to review before taking it.
  11. When you are finished, you will see your score (0 – 100). THIS IS NOT A GRADE. Check "What score do I need?" to find out if you are on track for your major. If not, use the personalized ALEKS modules to review, then retake the test.
