Graduate Degrees
The Department of Mathematics offers three graduate degrees.
MA Mathematics
The MA Mathematics Program is a thirty-three credit program designed for students interested in pure mathematics or mathematics education. The core curriculum consists of eighteen credits in abstract algebra, real analysis, mathematical statistics, and geometry. Students then select fifteen credits of electives in pure or applied mathematics; statistics; or, for those interested in the Concentration in Mathematics Education, mathematics education. For their capstone experience, students may choose either writing a thesis or taking an oral comprehensive exam.
MS in Applied Statistics
The MS Applied Statistics is a state-of-the art program that brings together statistical theory, computer programming, and scientific research. Our program emphasizes a flexible curriculum, offers paid internship opportunities, and convenient class offerings allowing for both full-time and part-time students. We encourage students from diverse academic backgrounds to consider our program. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, various undergraduate majors and interests are eligible for admissions. Our Master’s degree in Applied Statistics with a concentration in Biostatistics will prepare students for careers in medical research, pharmaceutical statistics, and bioinformatics. Our Master’s degree in Applied Statistics with a concentration in Business and Marketing Analytics will prepare students for careers in business, banking, risk management, and marketing analytics.
MS in Applied and Computational Mathematics
The MS Applied and Computational Mathematics graduate program is designed to prepare students for careers as industrial mathematicians and [or?] to pursue doctoral study in applied or computational mathematics, or related areas. The project-driven curriculum spans the realm of applied mathematics, including differential equations, discrete mathematics, probabilistic modeling, optimization, and statistical analysis Semester-long team-oriented projects culminating in formal technical reports and oral presentations are required in each course.
