Library - Reference Services

The Reference Desk and Reference Reading Room are located on the main (second) floor of the Library. The Reference collection contains a wide variety of subject-specific reference materials including specialized encyclopedias in English and in foreign languages. Surrounding the Reference Desk are 30 computer workstations with access to the Library catalog (PIL0T), hundreds of specialized databases, and the Internet. The Reference Reading Room is a quiet study area housing a variety of bibliographic and reference materials.

This position will provide general assistance with:
The general operations of marketing and outreach, including but not limited to pull statistics from Twitter, posting to social media, assisting with assembling materials for marketing events (buttons, table tents), staffing marketing events, taking pictures of library events, helping with exhibits, contributing blog post content as well as other duties as assigned. The general operations of electronic resources management and reference may include gathering statistics, use of Excel to create statistical reports, assisting with writing content for LibGuides, assisting with collection development needs in mathematics and computer science as well as other duties as assigned.

Learning Outcomes:
The experience will give the student insight and some experience into conducting social media for an organization as well as the potential for non-classroom writing samples. The student will also have the opportunity to gain a sense of responsibility and afford him/her the opportunity to learn skills and abilities required to work in a professional office environment. They may develop or expand their computer skills when completing projects.

Position Responsibilities:

This position will provide general assistance with:
Library processes involving book ordering, collection maintenance, shelving, shifting, periodic displays, and other miscellaneous clerical duties.
Specific duties as they relate to this department:
•Process book donations and after training and experience decide on disposition of items. •Search possible purchases and replacements in Gobi. •Identify holdings in HathiTrust particularly with consortial projects. •Search WorldCat for regional ownership. •Assist supervisor at campus and public events related to library business •Rearranging books on shelves, withdrawing items, removal of book jackets, checking circulation records, checking holding records of items to be purchased, assembling lists of books either for bibliographies or purchase, exhibits, scanning of material, other miscellaneous duties. Check Library catalog for items. Using MS Excel, and processing updated spreadsheets. •Prepare books for withdrawal including recycling book covers. •Gather items and artifacts for book displays. •Assist in creating exhibits and associated signage using Adobe Photoshop . •Record item’s circulation history using Voyager Circulation module. •Photocopy, scan both print and media (film, slides). •Refill scrap paper dispensers and pencils at student workstations. •Straighten books. •Spruce up areas around hole punches and printers (recycle paper).
Learning Outcomes:
Ability to purchase books with new titles associated with Business and Psychology.
