Riya's Career Journey

Riya Raju (she/her) graduated in May 2020 and currently serves as the Dean of Students at Eastwick College in Hackensack, where she oversees student affairs, provides counseling and advocacy, and acts as a voice for students while fostering an environment where they feel supported, heard, and empowered to grow academically and personally. Her work is fast-paced and purpose-driven, involving planning and coordinating student events, meeting with students facing personal or academic challenges, using motivational interviewing to guide them, and consistently advocating for their needs while offering encouragement and support. Her MSW education provided a strong foundation for her role, particularly through skills in motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral techniques (CBT), which she uses to help students reframe their thinking and build healthier behaviors. She manages stress by intentionally taking time to pause and reflect throughout the day, listening to gospel music, engaging in personal care routines, and relying on her faith for strength and guidance. She encourages current MSW students to remain committed and open to the wide range of opportunities within social work, emphasizing that the field’s versatility can lead to unexpected and fulfilling career paths. Reflecting on her experience, she notes that while timelines can feel overwhelming, delays can be valuable in shaping personal and professional growth, encouraging students to trust the process and keep moving forward. One of her favorite memories from the MSW program was her active involvement on campus, including working as a graduate assistant with Dub C Autism and collaborating with internship coordinators, experiences that helped her grow professionally, build meaningful relationships, and feel connected to the university community.
