West Chester University will host Frederick Douglass Day on Thursday, February 12, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 615 of the Francis Harvey Green (FHG) Library. The free event, organized by The Society of WCU in collaboration with the Frederick Douglass Institute and FHG Library, invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to celebrate the birthday of one of the 19th century’s most distinguished freedom advocates.

“Frederick Douglass’ commitment to education as a path to liberation continues to inspire our work at West Chester University,” said Dr. Tiffany E. Jones, President of The Society and a WCU associate professor. “Gathering our WCU community to honor his legacy through art, dialogue, and service reminds us of our shared responsibility to advance social justice and inclusive excellence.”

The drop-in event will feature art, writing, and discussion stations, along with an exhibit highlighting Frederick Douglass’ historical connection to WCU. Attendees can enjoy food, activities, and giveaways throughout the afternoon.

In honor of Douglass’ lifelong dedication to literacy, The Society of WCU will collect book donations for local elementary, middle, and high schools during the celebration. Participants may stop in at any time during the event.

The Society of WCU is a group of faculty, staff, and students who seek to elevate the social consciousness of the campus and community at large. Named in 1983 for the abolitionist, social justice educator, and civil rights leader who rose from slavery to become one of America’s most powerful voices for freedom, The Society facilitates work and service that promotes social justice, equity, the arts, and holistic education.

Registration is available on Ram Connect.
