WCU’s Dept. of Art + Design’s Presents I Thought You Were A Doorway: A Photography Exhibit by Dave Kube
Opening August 26 and continuing through October 13, 2024, West Chester University (WCU) students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding community are invited to visit the Knauer Gallery in the Swope Music Building and Performing Arts Center for I Thought You Were a Doorway, a photography exhibit by Dave Kube. The exhibit is FREE and open to the public. An opening reception is on Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 12 – 2 p.m. Swope Music Building is located at 817 S. High Street, West Chester, PA. Knauer Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
I Thought You Were a Doorway is a solo show of photography by Dave Kube that deals with queer identity and the nuanced concepts of borders.
Kube says, “Borders create a collection of guidelines in which actions, words, and desires construct queer identity. In this installation, I attempt to capture my lived experience of being confined by societal constructs and definitions. My work portrays my journey of traversing borders and dismantling the confines.”
Taking inspiration from Kube’s exhibit, the Department of Art + Design is calling for student artists to submit art in any medium that explores the complex meaning of border and identity. Students should drop off their art to the Knauer Gallery between October 7 and 10. The student show will be juried by Dave Kube and Nogin Chung, with selected works exhibited from October 16 to November 20, 2024. The top three student works will be awarded an Amazon gift card.
Kube adds, “The idea of borders can be understood differently in various contexts. While borders define nations and countries and serve as a symbol of division and separation, they also preserve cultural identities, and politically function as a target of subversion. In art, borders are sites of stability but become sites of instability when crossed.”
For questions about submitting student artwork, please reach out to Dr. Nogin Chung at nchung@wcupa.edu.
