WCU’s Dept. of Art + Design Exhibits 101 Artists: Selections from the Fred Danziger Collection of Contemporary Art101 Artists

West Chester University’s (WCU) Department of Art + Design will exhibit 101 Artists: Selections from the Fred Danziger Collection of Contemporary Art from March 7 – April 4, 2024. The exhibit is FREE and open to the public in the John H. Baker Gallery, E.O. Bull Center, 2 E. Rosedale Avenue, West Chester. Exhibit hours are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. An opening event takes place on Thursday, March 7, from 4 - 7 p.m.

The 101 Artists exhibit was organized by artist and art collector, Fred Danziger, partially in response to the closures that took place during COVID-19.

Danziger says, “When the lockdown occurred in March 2020, the shock to the art community was substantial as galleries, museums, and art schools closed their doors.”

The works are all from Danziger’s personal collection. They have been purchased from a variety of galleries and artists during the past 10 years. They span a wide variety of styles, from abstraction to highly rendered photorealism, from conceptual to perceptual approaches. The media include oil paintings, watercolor, drawings, prints, constructions, and sculpture.

Danziger says, “This exhibit is not about a particular aesthetic, it is about collecting art for its own sake. What unifies it is a basic artist’s statement. We were here. This is what we saw, felt, and thought. The exhibit is essentially a “traveling museum” of contemporary art, and is intended to promote three ideas: 1) To encourage and assist more people to become art collectors, especially those with modest means. 2.) To promote and encourage the work of the individual artists in the collection. 3.) To put original art out there, doing what art has done since the Paleolithic era- connecting us to nature, to each other, and to the spiritual aspects of life.”

101 ArtistsDanziger adds, “Even if a definition of art is subjective and somewhat ephemeral, when we think of the kind of society that we want to live in, most of us want art as a part of that world. By hosting this exhibit, West Chester University contributes to this important and hopeful enterprise.”
