Center for Women & Gender Equity Hosts Gender Justice Conference

CWGE conference in SykesThe Center for Women and Gender Equity (CWGE) presents the Third Annual Gender Justice Conference, a free, all-day, in-person event for students, on Wednesday, March 29, in Sykes Student Union. The conference will build upon previous learning and unify CWGE’s goals of addressing gender-based oppression and centering joy and liberation for all. The conference features a variety of lectures including two keynote speakers: Delaware County-based counselor and therapist Lexx Brown-James and New York Times bestselling author Sara Nović.

At 12 p.m. in Sykes Ballrooms, Brown-James will present “Deserved Pleasure: Empowering Your Birthright,” a lecture focused on sex positivity and breaking transgenerational sexual shame to achieve true intimacy in relationships. Brown-James offers individual and couples therapy, marriage coaching, and webinars and workshops for parents on how to teach sex ed to their children.

At 6 p.m., Nović will host a virtual discussion surrounding her novel, True Biz. The novel follows a year of romantic, political, and familial changes for a teacher and her pupils at a school for the deaf. Nović, who also penned Girl at War and America Is Immigrants, teaches deaf studies and creative writing at Stockton University and Emerson College.

Concurrent sessions take place at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. in Sykes Rooms 209, 210, and 252. Some topics include campus-based women’s centers; queerbaiting; racial disparities in birthing, maternal, and infant health; and redefining hegemonic masculinity in visual performance.

Registration information for the conference and discussions can be found on the CWGE RamConnect page or @wcu_cwge on Instagram (link in bio). For those who cannot attend, there is a Zoom option. For more information, email cwge@wcupa.edu.
