Biography

Marci Major serves as Chair and Associate Professor of Music Education at West Chester University where she teaches choral methods, graduate classes, works with student teaching observations, and teaches a service learning class in collaboration with the Kennett Symphony Children’s Chorus. Additionally she directs the Bel Canto ensemble with the Kennett Symphony Children’s Chorus.

As an active researcher, Dr. Major's primary interests encompass the economics of music education in today's public schools, and choral music identity in the middle levels. She has had her research accepted for publication in the Arts Education Policy Review, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, and the Missouri Journal of Research in Music Education. In addition to publications, she also presents her research at State, National, and International conferences including the International Society for Music Education (ISME), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), American Education Research Association (AERA), the Symposium for Research in Choral Singing, the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, and many state-level conferences. Dr. Major balances her research interest with the roles of clinician, adjudicator, and conductor by giving teacher preparation workshops and conducting honors choirs locally and across the nation.

Dr. Major earned her B.S. In music education from West Chester University, her M.M. In choral conducting from Michigan State University, and her Ph.D. In music education from The Ohio State University. Formerly Assistant Professor of Music Education and Assistant Director of Choral Activities at the University of Missouri, Dr. Major taught choral materials and methods, conducting and rehearsal techniques, psychology of music, and conducted MU's Concert Chorale. Dr. Major also served as the Artistic Director for the community choir Columbia Chorale, and co-directed the Choristers ensemble of the St. Louis Children's Chorus. Prior to her appointment at MU, Dr. Major taught middle and high school choir in Michigan, and later served as a graduate teaching associate at The Ohio State University.
