WCU Wireless Zones are maintained by Networking & Communications department with user support provided by Academic Computing Services.

Configuring Your Computer for Wireless (PDF Files requires Adobe Reader)

The University is constantly expanding its wireless network. In order to secure the wireless network from un-authorized access, we have implemented an authentication server. Please follow the instructions below in order to access the wireless network where available.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer (or Firefox/Safari/Chrome)
  2. Click YES to the Security Alert Window
  3. Login with WCU network User ID (eg. and Password
  4. Once you are authenticated, you will be able to access network resources and the Internet
  5. When you are finished, click Logout


Where do I go to get help about WCU Wireless Zone?

If you are a student, call the Student Technology Helpline at x3349.

If you are a faculty or staff member, call the Faculty and Staff Technology Helpline at x3350.

Is the entire campus wireless?

Wireless access is available in the following areas:

  • Allegheny Hall
  • Anderson Hall
  • Brandywine Hall
  • Library
  • Quad
  • South Campus
  • Student Recreation Center
  • Sykes
  • University Hall

Who can use the wireless network?

All WCU students, faculty and staff may connect to the network.

What is the range of a wireless access point?

Typically, the range (or the area surrounding an access point where wireless devices can connect) is anywhere from 100 feet (indoors) to 350 feet (outdoors). In many cases, wireless connectivity extends beyond the areas listed above (such as in common outdoor areas) depending upon your hardware and configuration.

How fast is the wireless network?

The wireless network supports speeds up to 54Mbps. Slower speeds may be experienced, depending upon how many users are attached to one access point, and how far from the access point you are.

How much does it cost the end user [me]?

There is no cost to access the wireless network. A wireless network adapter will be needed in order to connect. Most modern laptops have these built in.

What type of wireless card do I need to get connected?

Any IEEE 802.11b/g/n (also called Wi-Fi) wireless adapter should work. If you don't have a built in adapter you can buy one at office or department stores. Look for a USB Wireless Adapter.

What are WEP, WPA and SSID?

WEP and WPA are methods of encryption and neither is used on the wireless network. Disable encryption when you define your wireless connection for the campus wireless network. The SSID for your computer should be WCU_101.

Can I use my email, Blackboard, AOL, etc., using a WCU Wireless Zone?

Yes, connecting to the wireless network is the same as plugging into the wired one.

Will my Apple Airport card work?

Yes, your Apple Airport Card will work.
