Scholarships offered to students enrolled in one of the majors within the Kinesiology Department are awarded on various criteria which reflect the values and purposes of the donor or the founder of the award. The attached is a brief description of each scholarship.
The deadline for submitting an application is April 7th. Scholarships are awarded in the Fall semester, unless otherwise noted.
Eligibility Criteria and Application Process
You must currently be enrolled in one of the baccalaureate degree programs in the Kinesiology Department and have an active class schedule. Here's what you need to do to apply for a scholarship in the Kinesiology Department:
1. Department of Kinesiology Scholarship: 3 recipients in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Sophomore, junior or senior Kinesiology students having completed at least one full year of coursework at West Chester University. Overall GPA must be 3.0 or higher. Additional criteria include campus contributions, citizenship, character, and professional ability or contribution. Awards must be used for college expenses.
2. Kinesiology HPE Undergraduate Scholarship: 1 recipient in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Sophomore, junior or senior Kinesiology students having completed at least one full year of coursework at West Chester University. Overall GPA must be 3.0 or higher. Additional criteria include campus contributions, citizenship, character, and professional ability or contribution. Awards must be used for college expenses.
3. Earle C. Waters Scholarship: 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Any student having completed their first academic year with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 in the Department of Kinesiology, Health and Physical Education Teacher Preparation Program. Recipient must demonstrate financial need and qualities of a well-rounded student citizen by orderly participation in, and significant contribution to, the success of university or community-sponsored activities.
4. Winifred Piersol Reeser '43 Endowed Scholarship: 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Upperclassman who is committed to the field of Kinesiology and maintains a GPA of at least 3.0.
5. David Konitzer Memorial Endowed Scholarship: 1 recipient in 2017 Award: $500.00
Criteria: Sophomore, junior, or senior with a 3.0 or better GPA and whose major interest is to teach physical education. Applicant must demonstrate financial need, enjoy working with children and show athletic ability. Renewable provided recipient maintains at least a 3.0 GPA at West Chester University.
6. Anne M. Schaub Memorial Endowed Scholarship: 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $500.00
Criteria: Second semester female in the Teacher Certification Program. This scholarship is intended to perpetuate the attributes of a woman who gave so much of herself to others at West Chester. Requirements include a minimum GPA of 3.0, leadership potential, well-rounded university, departmental & professional activities, membership in the Majors Club, good character and financial need.
7. Herb Lee Scholarship: 3 recipients in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Any student in the Department of Kinesiology having completed 45 credits with an overall GPA of at least 3.0. Recipient must demonstrate a commitment to service in the community and at WCU as well as the qualities of a well-rounded student.
8. The Scott Robinson Mem. Adapted Phys Activ Scholarship 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Student studying advanced physical activities and volunteering in adapted physical activity programs. Applicants must submit a 1 page single-spaced typed essay on the topic of advocating for physcial activity, health and wellness for children with disabilities.
9. The Danielle Holmes Mem. Adapted PE Scholarship 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $100.00
Criteria: Student studying in Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities Minor. Awards will be granted at the completion of KIN 253 – Adapted Sports, Fitness and Aquatics.
10. The Joan M. Auten Kinesiology HPE Scholarship 4 recipients in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Third or fourth year student in the Teacher Certification Program who has demonstrated a commitment to teaching; financial need (FASFA) and a minimum GPA of 2.5at the time of application.
11. The Barbara Leighton Karas ’65 Mem. Kines Scholarship 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $1,000.00
Criteria: Undergraduate junior or senior Kinesiology student having completed at least 60 credits in the Health and Physical Education Teacher Certification Program with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a record of service and excellent performance in several areas at the university. Students must submit an essay about their career aspirations in teaching and coaching Physical Education with application.
12. The Lloyd Wilkinson ’57 Elementary PE Scholarship 4 recipients in 2017 Award: $1000.00
Criteria: Incoming freshman committed to pursuing a teaching career specializing in elementary physical education and intending to enroll in the Department of Kinesiology Teacher Certification Program. Preference given to students with experience working or volunteering in programs/services for special needs children. Applicant must be a United States citizen with special consideration afforded to veterans of military service, as well as ROTC and Marine OCS candidates. Applicants must submit a short biography emphasizing experiences that inspired interest in, or served to provide preparation for chosen field of study.
13. The Elinor Z. Taylor ’43 Scholarship 1 recipient in 2017 Award: $500.00
Criteria: The recipient will be an academically sound female student who is majoring in Kinesiology and has demonstrated financial need. The student must be entering her third year at WCU, have a 3.0 grade point average, and be a resident of Chester County. Special consideration shall be given to a student who shows an interest in officiating sports. However, this is not a requirement to receive the scholarship.
14. The Joan Auten Women’s Intramural Sports Scholarship 1 recipient in 2017 Award: $1000.00
Criteria: The recipient will be a female who has completed the freshman year. Be a serious and capable student maintaining a GPA of at least a 2.0. Demonstrated financial need. Not be a participant in the intercollegiate sports program. Be an enthusiastic and sportsman like participant in the intramural sports program.
15. The Jeanne Cross Scholarship 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $1000.00
Criteria: The recipient will be an incoming first-year student who intends to major in Kinesiology. This student must have demonstrated financial need.
16. The Lenfest Foundation Scholarship 2 recipients in 2017 Award: $1000.00
Criteria: The recipient must have graduated from one of the comprehensive public high schools in Philadelphia.
17. The Tommy Slater Adapted PE Scholarship 1 recipient in 2017 Award: $500.00
Criteria: The recipient must be involved in the Adapted Physical Education program within the Department of Kinesiology, who has volunteered in adapted physical education, disability sports, Special Olympics, or the Adapted Lifetime Fitness program for at least 20 hours.
18. The Monita Lank Scholarship 1 recipient in 2017 Award: $750.00
Criteria: The recipient will be an undergraduate student enrolled in the Exercise Science program in the Department of Kinesiology. The student should be at least a junior, having successfully completed at least 24 credits of Exercise Science core courses with no grade lower than a B-minus, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 for all courses.
19. The Norman Cochran Scholarship 1 recipients in 2017 Award: $1000.00
Criteria: The recipient will be a Kinesiology major with demonstrated financial need to be selected by the department chair.
20. The Joesph Edwards Scholarship 0 recipients in 2016 Award: $00.00
21. The Nelson Stratton Scholarship No award allocated by KIN Dept Scholarship Committee in 2016
Criteria: The recipient will be a Kinesiology major in Junior year and have a grade point average 3.0 or better, including (if a transfer student) credits from course work at another institution of higher learning. Will have completed a minimum of 30 credits at WCU. Will provide Awards Committee with at least one letter of recommendation unsing the Awards Committee Recommendation Form from a current Kinesiology Department faculty member. Also considered will be the recipient’s leadership qualities, dedication to athletics, physical fitness and wellness, communication skills, and integrity and character.
