Dr. Zhang is a licensed clinical psychologist who teaches a variety of courses in both counseling and student affairs. He has more than 20-year experiences of teaching in counseling, higher education counseling/student affairs, and language at colleges and universities. His research interests include cross-cultural counseling, race and gender difference, acculturation, personality, college student development, and racial identity.

Dr. Zhang authored, coauthored, edited, and co-edited over 40 articles, book chapters, and books. His most recent books include Field Experience: Transitioning from Student to Professional, Counseling Theory: Guiding Reflective Practice, Becoming a Skilled Counselor, Rentz’s Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education, and Psychology. He has also co-edited with Dr. Richard Parsons the book series – Counseling and Professional Identity in the 21st Century which consists over 20 counseling books. Dr. Zhang is the recipient of the Travel Award from the American Psychological Association (APA), Outstanding Research Award, and Outstanding Service Award from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). He has practiced over 15 years and frequently gives presentations and conducts counseling training workshops both in and outside the United States.
