HRSA Grant Program

Strengthening partnerships with integrated care centers in our community

In 2017, West Chester University’s MSW and MEd School Counseling Programs were awarded a $1.6 million U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Behavioral Health Workforce and Education Training (BHWET) grant. The primary goals of the grants are to increase the number of social workers and school counselors trained in integrated care and to expand behavioral health services to medically underserved populations and communities.

In September of 2018, WCU was awarded an additional almost $300k supplemental HRSA BHWET grant to train fifteen more students over the next two academic years in integrated care settings in opioid use/substance use disorder (OUD/SUD) treatment with medically-assisted treatment (MAT). As the three partner sites for the supplemental grant, Project H.O.P.E. Camden, Philadelphia FIGHT, and Community Health and Dental Care each receive $400k from HRSA to further their own programs in integrated care and OUD/SUD treatment with MAT.

The four-year grant (fall 2017-spring 2021) and supplemental two-year grant (fall 2018-spring 2020) will support and train a total of 116 West Chester University students from the Departments of Graduate Social Work and Counselor Education. Each academic year, eligible students will be selected to participate in experiential (field) learning and interprofessional behavioral health training at 40+ partner sites that will prepare them to work in settings that integrate primary care and behavioral health and/or OUD/SUD treatment with MAT.

Selected students receive $10,000 stipends for successful completion of the program.
