As a career-changer, I came to Social Work after almost two decades of working in the field of international justice and human rights work as a researcher, writer, communications specialist, and documentary film producer. Prior to the start of the War on Iraq in 2003, I also co-founded the anti-war campaigning group Theaters Against War in New York City, and in 2009, I worked as the co-chair of the first Kurdish Film Festival in the United States. I currently work as a gerontological social worker in an older adult facility that is part of the US-based Eden Alternative program founded by Dr. Bill Thomas. My primary areas of interest are mindfulness work with older adults; grief and loss; and institutional culture change in over-65 communities. I remain actively involved in economic and social justice initiatives in Philadelphia and work with a number of grassroots groups fighting against economic inequality, racism, and discrimination. I earned a Masters degree in English (Literary History and Cultural Discourse) from the University of Sussex (UK) and a Masters degree in Social Work from West Chester University.
