David I. Backer

Assistant Professor
Ph.D., Columbia University, Teachers College

David I. Backer joined the faculty at West Chester University in Fall 2016. He holds a doctorate in Philosophy and Education from Columbia University, Teachers College. His dissertation, “The Distortion of Discussion,” looked at the social and political significance of classroom discussion. Specifically, he examined when teachers and facilitators say that there will be discussion of some subject, but then lead a recitation, which he argued can manufacture consent to a neoliberal ideology.

Area of Instruction

Dr. Backer teaches in the Educational Foundations and Policy Studies graduate courses and the Doctorate of Education in Policy, Planning and Administration courses. He currently advises doctoral student research.

Publications and Professional Activities

Dr. Backer’s research focuses generally on education and ideology. He is currently at work on an educational reading of Louis Althusser’s philosophy and its implications for school policy and practice. His research has appeared or will be published in Harvard Educational Review, Educational Theory, Democracy & Education, Hybrid Pedagogy, and Issues in Teacher Education. Backer has also written on education and politics for general audiences in Jacobin.
