Middle Grades Preparation/Special Education
Joseph served locally as a camp counselor with the American Diabetes Association's Camp Freedom last summer. He served as a cabin camp counselor for a week with twelve-year-old boys dealing with diabetes by leading and participating with all the activities we envision with camp.
In addition, though, Joseph supported campers by:
- ensuring blood sugar levels were checked,
- brainstorming ideas to find fun ways to motivate campers to complete blood sugar monitoring,
- assisted the campers with midnight blood sugar checks,
- Joseph displayed kindness and initiative as he relieved his co-cabin counselor, also a diabetic, by taking on the midnight checks for the entire cabin for the week, allowing his colleague to have a complete night's rest.
To quote Joseph: "This group of children helped me realize that this age group is what I am called to teach….This camp [really] helped me to realize that I cannot wait to become a teacher."
