Student Groups

The Economics and Finance Society

The Economics and Finance Society (EFS) at West Chester University is a student organization whose members consist of students interested in economics and finance matters. In addition to providing campus networking opportunities for students with similar interests in the economics and finance fields, EFS has also engendered closer relationships between students and faculty. The organization also serves as a forum for discussing the role of economics in public policy.

It is not mandatory that EFS members be economics or finance majors, however, it would be useful if interested students have an interest in either economics or finance.

Each year, the EFS members plan one field trip, usually either to the financial district in New York City or to a site in Washington, D.C. Students interested in making a career on Wall Street may find such trips helpful in developing useful networking contacts early in their academic careers. The Society participates in WCU's Adopt-A-Block program, spending two mornings each year cleaning one square city block close to campus. The organization typically hosts an annual career night and invites recruiters from regional businesses to visit with students.

Investment Group

The purpose of this organization is to provide a valuable educational experience to its members by allowing them to manage an investment portfolio. Through mutual interests, members will learn first-hand about financial markets and investing philosophies, while developing strong teamwork, public speaking, and analytical skills. This experience is facilitated through the fund’s periodic meetings, workshops, and guest speakers.

Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE)

This is the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of the Omicron Delta Epsilon International Honor Society in Economics (ODE). The primary objective of the Honors program is to recognize and honor scholastic achievement in economics.

Professional Groups

As part of efforts to push the frontier of knowledge in economics and finance, Economics and Finance Department faculty members actively participates in the Pennsylvania Economics Association (PEA). Accordingly, WCU Economics and Finance Department faculty members submit, present and peer-review papers for PEA conferences.

These conferences take place at annual meetings of the PEA, and have attracted economists from not only Pennsylvania and the surrounding states of Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Ohio and West Virginia, but also from other countries including Japan, Austria, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Mexico, India, France, and Taiwan.

West Chester University hosted the last PEA during the late spring of 2003. Research papers were presented and critiqued at this conference.
