Zika Virus – The virus usually causes a mild illness spread by mosquitoes. Symptoms include fever, rash, muscle and/or joint pain, red eyes, headache. No vaccine or medication is available for prevention or treatment. Authorities are investigating a potential link between Zika virus in pregnant women and a birth defect called microcephaly. The CDC has issued travel alerts for pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant to avoid travel to countries with Zika virus transmission.
Travelers to Zika affected areas should protect themselves from mosquito bites. Sexual transmission of Zika virus from a male partner is possible, so travelers to these countries are also encouraged to use condoms. The Zika virus has been linked to Guillain-Barre' syndrome. Current health information and travel alerts are provided by the CDC. Please contact your health care provider or Student Health Services if you develop symptoms and have traveled to an area where Zika is found.
