Incoming Transfer Students

The Financial Aid Office staff realizes that transferring from your current school to WCU can be challenging as there is so much to do—including securing your financial aid here for the next semester.  Following the checklists below will ensure smooth transitions and help you get your funding in place.

Steps to Ensure a Smooth Transition

If you are transferring into WCU for the Fall semester:

  • Make sure that the Financial Aid Office at your current school knows that you will not be returning for the next semester so they can report you as no longer attending that institution
  • Make sure you complete the FAFSA, listing West Chester University as your first-choice school—our school code is 003328
  • PHEAA’s state grant FAFSA deadline is May 1st of each year—if your FAFSA does not have WCU listed as the first-choice school, go to www.pheaa.org to change enrollment to West Chester University
  • Apply for PLUS or private education loans on June 1st
  • Accept any federal student loans you are awarded on myWCU
  • Regularly monitor your WCU e-mail for award notices and requests for information we may need to complete your financial aid
  • West Chester University has a deferred payment plan where you can make monthly payments toward your bill—information can be found on the Bursar’s Office webpage of the University website
  • Once the fall semester begins at WCU, make sure to complete an enrollment verification form, complete with your loan servicer’s address and phone number—this is available on the Registrar’s website and you must complete this so your loan(s) does not go into repayment
  • Final notes—your enrollment status (credits you have scheduled for the semester) and the amount of credits you transfer into WCU are used in determining the amount of aid you receive.
  • Remember to apply for WCU scholarships in February for the following academic year—available on the Financial Aid Office page of the University website.

If you are transferring into WCU for the Spring semester:

  • Make sure that the Financial Aid Office at your current school knows that you will not be returning for the next semester so they can cancel the remaining disbursements of your current grants and loans, and so you can complete any exit paperwork they require
  • Check your FAFSA to make sure that West Chester University is listed as one of the schools to receive your information—our school code is 003328
  • If you are a PHEAA grant recipient, go to www.pheaa.org to change your enrollment for the spring semester to West Chester University
  • Once you have scheduled for classes, contact the Financial Aid Office to make sure we have received your FAFSA and your state grant record, if applicable
  • Monitor your account on myWCU and watch for an award notice from our office containing your spring semester awards and important instructions on accepting your loans at WCU
  • If you have a PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) at your current school, your parent must reapply for the spring semester portion of the loan at https://studentloans.gov
  • If you have a private education loan at your current school, please contact that lender to make sure the spring funds are canceled and then reapply on that lender’s website for the spring portion of the loan at WCU
  • West Chester University has a deferred payment plan where you can make monthly payments toward your bill—information can be found on the Bursar’s Office webpage of the University website
  • Once you the spring semester begins at WCU, make sure to complete an enrollment verification form, complete with your loan servicer’s address and phone number—this is available on the Registrar’s website and you must complete to avoid your loan going into repayment
  • You can apply for WCU scholarships for the next academic year beginning in February on the Financial Aid Office webpage of the University website
  • Final notes—you will be awarded whatever remaining eligibility you have for the academic year in grants and loans. Your enrollment status (credits you have scheduled for the semester) and the number of credits you transfer into WCU are used in determining the amount of aid you receive. This may differ from your eligibility at your current school, so it is important to watch your e-mails on your West Chester University e-mail account for the most up-to-date information about financial aid and billing
