Summer Orientation for Incoming Students

Incoming first-year students are required to attend a two-part orientation program designed just for them. At orientation, you will:

  • Meet other new students
  • Explore campus
  • Learn about living in a residence hall or commuting
  • Find resources to be successful at WCU

Part 1:  June Orientation

Part 1 of orientation is a one-day session in June.  We offer orientation sessions on nine different dates in June so you can choose a day that works for your schedule. The link to register for a June date will be in your myWCU account once registration opens in late April/early May.

2019 orientation sessions will be held on the following days:

Week One:  Wednesday, June 12, Thursday, June 13, Friday, June 14

Week Two:  Wednesday, June 19, Thursday, June 20, Friday, June 21

Week Three:  Wednesday, June 26, Thursday, June 27, Friday, June 28

Part 2:  August Orientation

Part 2 of orientation, August Orientation, takes place during move-in weekend.  You will move in on Friday, August 23rd according to the schedule you will receive over the summer from Residence Life & Housing Services or University Student Housing. Orientation programs begin Friday evening and continue on Saturday and Sunday. Commuter students are required to attend Part 2 as well and will have a specific scheduled designed just for them by the Office of Off Campus and Commuter Services.

No registration is required for August orientation.  Instead, you will follow a schedule designed specifically for your residence hall or commuter students. The schedules will be posted here in mid/late August and you will be notified via your WCU email when they are available.  You will also be able to access the schdules during the Part 2 weekend through the WCU app.

Remember, both the June and the August orientation programs are mandatory!

What to Expect at June Orientation

In the morning, you will park at the Sharpless Street Parking Garage then check in right across the street at the Business and Public Management Center.  At check-in you'll get a schedule for the day and be placed in a peer group that's typically related to your major.

After some light refreshments and a brief welcome, your orientation leader will take you on an in-depth campus tour, and you'll receive information about living on campus or commuting.  You'll also meet with an academic advisor who will review your schedule and answer your questions. Throughout the day you will learn about resources to help you be successful, network with other new students, and find out how to get involved in your first year here at WCU.

June Orientation FAQs

  1. Is Orientation Mandatory?
Yes! Orientation is important for your success at WCU, so all first-year students are required to attend both Orientation Part 1 in June and Part 2 in August.
  2. How do I register for Part 1 in June?
Easy!  Log into your myWCU account, look for the registration link under the Alerts section, and complete the form.  The link will be available in myWCU beginning in early May.
  3. Is there a New Student Fee?
Yes, a one-time new student fee will be placed on your first semester bill. This fee covers all the costs associated with both the June and August orientation programs. These costs include all staffing, materials, presenters, meals, social activities, and student IDs.
  4. How will I know which June Orientation I am attending?
Once you complete your online registration, you'll receive a confirmation with your orientation date in your WCU e-mail.  Your orientation date will also appear below the registration link in myWCU once you've registered.  Remember to check your WCU e-mail often and visit the IT Help Desk to link your WCU e-mail to your smartphone.
  5. Can my parents, family members, or other guests attend orientation with me?
Parents, family members, and other guests are welcome to attend the optional family and guest orientation we hold on all the June orientation dates. Your family and guests will attend a separate program, so you will not be together during the day. There is no charge for the family and guest orientation, however lunch is not provided.  Lunch tickets for Lawrence Dining Hall will be available to purchase at check-in.  Families and guests do not attend Part 2 in August.
  6. How long is the orientation day?
Orientation check-in starts at 8:00 a.m. The program begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at approximately 3:35 p.m. Please keep this in mind when scheduling your orientation day as you must stay for the entire program or you may be required to make up the orientation.
  7. Can I change my orientation session?
Yes, you can change your date by returning to the link in myWCU and selecting a new date. Changes can only be made if space permits, so it's best to choose your date carefully when first registering. If a date is not listed in the drop-down options, then that session is full and students are no longer able to register for that date.
  8. What if I miss the day I registered for?
If you miss your scheduled day, contact New Student Programs at 610-436-3305 as soon as possible and we will reschedule you if space permits. If you are unable to attend a later session in June, you must make up the missed orientation at a late session held in August.
  9. Does WCU offer overnight housing for orientation, or are there hotel accommodations in the area?
WCU does not offer overnight accommodations; however, there are multiple hotel options in the West Chester area.  A list of area hotels can be found under the Visitors tab on the University‚Äôs home page or on the Brandywine Valley Visitor's Bureau website.

Free parking is offered in the Sharpless Parking Garage at 15 Sharpless Street on orientation days.  Please see our campus map and parking instructions. You may also park in any lots/areas designated as student parking, however, do not park in areas designated faculty/staff  as you will be ticketed and possibly towed. Street parking is metered or by permit only and is controlled by the Borough of West Chester. Parking meters and street permit regulations are strictly enforced by the Borough, even in the summer.
  11. Where does June Orientation take place?
Check-in takes place at the Business and Public Management Center located across the street from the Sharpless Street Parking Garage.  Orientation programs are held in various buildings throughout campus, so wear comfortable walking shoes!  Please see our Campus Map to find the check-in location.
