What is Career Development?

There are many theories and models for career development; the theoretical underpinnings of the resources and services we provide at WCU are primarily developmental. We employ a sound fundamental approach that career development is a life-long, cyclical process. Depending upon all of the internal and external forces and factors that different people experience, not every student will progress through this process in the same manner or on the same timeline. And yet it is our goal to help individuals understand this process so they can most successfully navigate their own career development throughout their lifetime.

Career Decision-Making Process

Decision-Making: Identify where you are in the decision-making process and what next steps will be helpful for you.

Self-Awareness: Think about your dreams, interests, values, and skills and how they relate to majors and careers.

Exploration: Review majors, careers, and student activities to help you narrow down your options.

Preparation & Experience: Strengthen your professional skills by writing a resume and cover letter, interviewing, and applying to opportunities.

Reflection & Action: Consider how things are going and your future goals.
