5-S Workplace Organization Workshop

Duration: 18 hours (usually 3 hours a week for 6 weeks)

Course Description: The 5S Workplace Organization Workshop is designed to deliver the fundamental concepts of 5S to your workforce so your organization can begin putting this powerful system to work. Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain - together, these 5 simple principles form the basis of the 5S System. 5S is a powerful front-line tool for simplifying work processes, improving equipment maintenance, ensuring safety and product quality and eliminating waste. 5S is the basis for any on-the-job process improvement activity. At the completion of the course they will present the final results to company management.

Participants All team members in a desired focus area. (Usually after an Intro to Lean Workshop) Optimum class size: 10-12

Course Outline:

Module 1: Sort

  • Organization - Keep only necessary items in the workplace, remove everything else.

Module 2: Set In Order

  • Orderliness - Arranging and labeling necessary items to be found quickly and promote efficient flow.

Module 3: Shine

  • Cleanliness - Keeping everything swept and clean for inspection, safety, customer tour ready and preventative maintenance.

Module 4: Standardize

  • Standard - Set standards for a consistently safe, clean and organized workplace.

Module 5: Sustain

  • Sustaining the discipline of 5S - Making a habit of properly maintaining correct 5S procedures.

Course Outcome: You can expect your team members to come away with a thorough understanding of each of the 5S concepts: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain. They will have hands on experience implementing all aspects 5S in the focus area(s) and will know how to implement 5S in additional areas. You can expect any area where 5S is correctly implemented to be safer, more efficient, cleaner and easier to keep clean, better organized, to have set standards which makes is easier to train new employees to meet and maintain those standards.
