Course Description: Decision making and problem solving skills are key to organizational success, but how do we navigate through the thought process before arriving at a decision or solution? This course examines the thinking methods our minds use to make decisions, and exposes common flaws in thinking and decision making. Throughout, the concept of System 1 (Unconscious) thinking versus System 2 (Conscious) thinking is discussed, tools are given to improve critical thinking, and a methodical process for strategic thinking is outlined. Participants will work through practice problems and various exercises to reinforce core concepts.

Audience: Ideal for individuals at all levels in the organization. Optimum class size: 10-25.

  • System 1 versus System 2: thinking methods used by our minds to make decisions
  • Common decision traps and how to avoid them
  • Using tools to aid critical thinking: checklists, root cause analysis, and others
  • Introduction to strategic thinking: looking at the world in a new way
  • A methodical process for strategic thinking
  • Mastering the disciplines of strategic thinking
  • Tools for generating innovation and new strategic insight
  • How to gain a strategic perspective
  • Intentional and unintentional consequences—forecasting the cause and effect decisions
  • Envisioning the future state and facilitating strategic change
  • Reviewing the business and industry environment: assessing your current organization using a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis
  • Building an action plan to expand the strategic thinking skills of yourself and colleagues

Course Outcome: Participants enrolled in this course will learn to recognize common errors in decision making, apply appropriate tools to aid critical thinking, and master the strategic thinking process.
