Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence

Duration: Half-day

Course Description: Being emotionally aware is the first step in managing and understanding emotional intelligence, and achieving goals through relationships. Emotional Intelligence (EI) or Emotional Quotient (EQ) is the capacity of individuals to recognize their own, and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and to manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt environments or achieve one's goals. This course examines the concept of EI in detail, teaches strategies to increase participant’s EI, and explores appropriate reactions and responses to specific behaviors. Participants will complete an emotional intelligence quiz and review case situations that involve EI to reinforce their understanding.

Audience: This workshop will be useful to any manager or employee who must work cooperatively with a variety of people who hold a range of perspectives and opinions. Optimum class size: 10-25.

Course Outline:

Attendees will explore elements of Emotional Intelligence in the following ways:

  • Participants take a brief survey to highlight elements of EI including active listening, grace under pressure, etc.
  • Each behavior is reviewed with specific options for actions (how to respond to direct criticism, how to demonstrate active listening, etc.)
  • Group reviews and discuss case situations where EI is called for, building a toolbox of interpersonal options.

Course Outcome: Participants will understand the concept of emotional intelligence, gauge their own emotional acuity, and learn specific strategies, such as mindfulness and strategic listening, to increase their own EI.
