Managing Conflict in the Workplace

Duration: Half-day

Course Description: Managing conflict is a balancing act vital to keeping the workplace productive and adaptable. Too little conflict can lead to complacently and too much can lead to chaos. This interactive workshop offers long-term perspective and practical day-to-day skills that assist people in organizations to manage conflict in a way that encourages creativity and collaboration. Special attention will be paid to dealing with difficult people and addressing the challenge of conflict when technology (email, texting, etc.) mediates communication. Role-playing, case examples, and group discussions are used to enhance learning.

Audience: This workshop will be useful to any manager or employee who must work cooperatively with a variety of people who hold a range of perspectives and opinions. Optimum class size: 10-25.

Course Outline:

Module One: Understanding the types and role of conflict in the workplace. Attendees will learn to:

  • Identify the styles of conflicts that people employ, using the conflict grid and the productivity chart
  • Explore the strengths and challenges of the various conflict styles
  • Explore how different strategies combine
  • Identify some of the most challenging styles to work with and manage
  • Identify how technology is now impacting conflict in the workplace

Module Two: Case Examples. Participants will work together to:

  • Identify some of the types of conflicts group members have used and faced
  • Discuss past strategies that have worked and not worked

Module Three: Applying Skills. Participants will work with the facilitator to:

  • Develop, present, and analyze structured role plays in which participants demonstrate strategies that have not worked in the past

Course Outcome: Participants will identify a variety of conflict styles, explore how different styles combine and clash, and employ effective strategies to manage interaction with a variety of people.
