For University Students

What do I get out of mentoring?

  • Direct, hands-on experience
  • Openings to work professionally with young people
  • Chances to put into practice academic study about writing, communications, education, psychology, and other areas
  • Opportunities to contribute and give back to local communities, schools and students

What do I commit to?
Writing Zones has paid ($8/hour+) and volunteer opportunities available. Paid mentors commit to two 3- hour shifts each week and a weekly staff meeting. Volunteer mentors commit to one 3-hour shift each week and a bi-weekly, brief, supervision session.

What supports do I get?
Training session which includes an introduction to writing center pedagogy, a briefing on the project, and mock one-on-one sessions.

Bi-weekly staff meetings provide opportunities for additional training and professional development.

Staff are always available via phone/email to address individual concerns or answer questions.

What qualifies me to be a mentor?
We are looking for outgoing, mature, skilled writers and students who can serve as role models to youth. Preference is given to individuals who are currently enrolled in or have successfully completed one (or more) of the following courses: English 390, English 392, English 397.

Strong and resourceful writer.

Interested in helping youth, especially low-income and culturally diverse youth, become stronger writers and more ambitious students.

Available during school hours. Shifts are morning (approximately 7:45a.m.-10:45a.m.) and afternoon (approximately 11a.m.-2pm).

At least 30 credits of university work or at least sophomore standing

3.0+ GPA (some exceptions made for strong writers with difficulties in other areas)
