IT’S OKAY TO BE UNDECIDED!

That needs repeating, IT'S OKAY TO BE UNDECIDED!

You are not alone!
It's estimated that at least 80% of all students entering college are undecided about their major or career choice. What's really unfortunate is that most of these undecided, at least 80 percent of all students entering college, feel they are all alone and that they are the only ones who are undecided.

Choosing a major and a career is a lot of pressure!
Being undecided can be frustrating and even discouraging. It's important to understand that choosing a major is a process that involves growth and self-discovery. There are no shortcuts or magic solutions.

There is help out there!
The Pre-Major Academic Advising Center’s goal is to help you embark on this important process. We hope you will gain the information and insight needed to make an appropriate choice. However, you must actively participate for the following guidelines to be helpful.

It's okay to be unsure about your academic goals. There are resources on campus to assist you in making your decisions. Your Pre-Major Academic Advisor can help you as you travel the road to self-discovery.

Which comes first, the major or the career?
When students are choosing a major, they often evoke the old "chicken and egg" question of "Which comes first?" Should you choose an occupation and then determine which majors can lead you there or pick a major and figure out what occupations are relevant? Keep in mind that choosing a major and choosing a career are not the same thing.

Either approach is legitimate. If you know which academic subjects interest you, you might consider making the educational decision first. If you have a general career direction, you can find out which major(s) lead to that career.

As a Pre-Major student at West Chester University, you can explore your major options while fulfilling General Education requirements. You may even discover interests you never knew you had!

How and where do I get started?
What if you have no idea about a major or career, are trying to decide between more than one, or haven't given it much thought one way or the other? Information, information, information! You need information about yourself, about majors, and about the world of work.

Where can you get that information? From friends and family. From people who are in a career you might be interested in. Through Career Exploration on-line and elsewhere. Most importantly, from Yourself. No one knows what you like/dislike, what your skills are, and what makes you happy better than YOU!
